The 2023 ratings cited in the video are historical references, not verified current scores. This review has not independently reconstructed those archived ratings. High starting achievement does not necessarily mean low growth. Confirm school, grade, intended year and capacity with the district.

Q:Zillow

Irvine School Ratings Dropped — Did the Schools Get Worse?

If you see an Irvine school's rating fall from 9 to 7 on a website, hold off on conclusions. How the score is calculated matters more than the number itself.
Key Takeaways
- School ratings on Zillow and Redfin usually come from third-party organizations like GreatSchools, not official government ratings.
- Methods and reporting years differ. GreatSchools updated its methodology in 2025; the video’s earlier Equity-based formula is not current.
- At recording, Northwood High's overall score fell to 7 on one site while its test scores remained 10; on another site it was still A+ and ranked among California's top public high schools.
- High test scores do not inherently imply low growth. GreatSchools says high-starting students can earn high growth scores; review peer comparisons and data limitations.
- Beyond ratings, consider your child's peers, clubs, and teacher attention.
1Where These Ratings Come From
When browsing homes on Zillow or Redfin, you often see ratings for assigned schools. Most come from third-party organizations such as GreatSchools.org, displayed by real estate sites. Over time, many people came to treat them as official.
In fact, they are not ratings from the City of Irvine, the school district, or the state; each organization uses its own rules and weights.
2Why a Rating Might Drop
Take Northwood High School at the time of recording: on GreatSchools, its "academic progress" score was about 3, while its test scores were a perfect 10, for an overall rating of about 7.
The video’s limited-room explanation is a simplified personal interpretation. Student Progress uses state growth data; Academic Progress may serve as a proxy when usable growth data is absent. High-starting schools can earn high progress ratings. Check methods, data years and results rather than assuming either a formula-only change or weaker teaching.
Less room to improve does not mean a school is worse.
3A Different Site, a Different Conclusion
On Niche.com, another widely used site, Northwood High was still rated A+ in the same period and listed among California's top public high schools. Niche considers academics, teachers, diversity, college prep, administration, and clubs and activities, with most categories in the A range.
The same school can look very different under different rules. Ratings are a reference, not a verdict. (Ratings update over time; check current data.)
4What Matters More When Choosing a School
Rather than fixating on rankings, ask practical questions: Will your child find the right peers? Are there clubs and activities they care about? How much attention do teachers give? Where do graduates go?
The video draws on client-family experiences to encourage looking beyond one score. Those observations do not guarantee every school’s current quality or every child’s outcome; examine specific programs, support and dated data.
FAQ
Q:Are Zillow school ratings official?
No. They usually come from third-party organizations like GreatSchools, not the government or district.
Q:Why do ratings for the same school vary so much between sites?
Organizations use different methods, weights, data and update schedules. Scores are not interchangeable, and GreatSchools has changed its method since this 2023 video.
Q:Are Irvine schools still strong?
A 2023 rating is not current evidence for every school. Check the particular school, grade, data year, programs and support, and confirm address-based assignment and capacity for the intended year.
